Below are videos of some of the songs you will hear....
'But a Short Time to Live' is a poem written by Leslie Coulson, a poet and journalist who fought and died in the First World War.
It is paired with the folk song 'Danny Boy' to offer two perspectives on war; that of a soldier and a loved one who is left behind.
'High Germany' is an English folk song sharing the story of a young couple; Willie and Polly, as Willie prepares to go and fight in the war in High Germany.
He asks Polly to go along with him however, she states that her feet hurt....Also, she is pregnant, so war is probably not the best place for her. She laments the loss of another person in her life to war.
Many versions of this song exist. In our interpretation we have split the narrative between us to emphasise the story and characters.
'Free Life' is an original song that we wrote on our most recent trip to South Africa. It considers how a group of people can flee oppression, setting out to build a life of freedom, only then to become oppressors themselves. It's a pattern that we see repeated throughout history.
The lyrics remind us that fear keeps us in a prison. The chorus of the song yearns for 'free life, free land, free love', concepts that may sound naive or ignorant, but are paired with words said by Nelson Mandela
'It all seems impossible until it's done.'
